Basel Ramlawi, MD, is an attending cardiovascular surgeon at Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center (HMDHVC). He is the associate program director for thoracic surgery education at HMDHVC and MD Anderson Cancer Center. Previously, Dr. Ramlawi held a faculty appointment within the division of cardiothoracic surgery at Columbia University and NY-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. He undertook his medical education at McGill and McMaster Universities, followed by cardiac surgical training at the University of Western Ontario. He completed an NIH-funded fellowship and earned the MMSc degree from Harvard Medical School as well as an advanced clinical fellowship in minimally invasive valve and aortic surgery at Columbia University.
Dr. Ramlawi's clinical expertise includes complex cardiac surgery, cardiac valve surgery, minimally invasive surgery, thoracic aortic and root surgery, arrhythmia (atrial fibrillation) surgery and transplant and assist devices.
Dr. Ramlawi is the recipient of prestigious awards such as the American Heart Association Vivien Thomas Award, the Henry Christian Award and the Detweiler Fellowship. In 2010, he was selected by the Houston Business Journal as one of Houston's Top Forty Under Forty Award recipient. He is an active speaker at international cardiology and cardiovascular surgery conferences.
His research interests include minimally invasive valve repair surgery, stroke prevention and neurologic outcomes in cardiac patients and ventricular assist devices.
