Biography

Dr. David Lionberger was born in Columbia, Mo. to a family of medical and research-oriented educators. Completing his undergraduate and doctorate degree in medicine at the University of Missouri, he finished his residency training in orthopaedic surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Lionberger then completed a fellowship at the Brigham and Woman’s Hospital at Harvard University. There his interest in research was rekindled, as was his academic and education focus. After this advanced fellowship training in adult reconstructive surgery, which included shoulder, hip and knee, he performed the first electromagnetic-guided, computer-assisted surgery in the world, the first allergy-resistant total knee revision in the United States, and has continued to improve orthopedic care.

His love of research is well documented by the plethora of articles and chapters that he has written in the past three decades. This includes articles on total joint replacement, navigation and primary investigative studies of new drug applications. Accuracy in total knee replacement, mediation of postoperative pain and functional enhancement programs are some of the current work that is detailed at the Foundation for Southwest Orthopedic Research. His pioneering work using computer-assisted surgery to shorten hospital stay without reducing accuracy has remained the standard on which other institutions pattern their programs.

Dr. Lionberger’s other interests include restoring vintage antique vehicles and farm machines, flying, and maintaining a small farm. When the opportunity arises, he is an avid skier (snow and water) and passionately supports nature and wildlife preservation, and natural resource management. He also maintains a community spirit and can be found working at Main Street Ministries at First Presbyterian Church at South Main on Mondays.

Dr. Lionberger is a consultant for a variety of medical and pharmaceutical companies. His expertise is sought after in technological design of implants, efficiency of health care delivery and reduction in postoperative pain initiatives.
